Conclusions: The Tensions and Dilemmas of Transience
The chapter describes the contribution that the book has made to the study of transience and temporary uses in urban development. I highlight the way that the different temporalities related to construction materials and to buildings – and those experienced by different actors – inform alternative perspectives on transience. I emphasise the importance, for analysis, of the structural position of a temporary use in an urban system in spatial, temporal and socio‐cultural terms. I illustrate how this position is contingent upon circumstances and affects the terms of engagement between an innovative use and established actors and institutions. I identify the major challenges of transforming a temporary use into a long‐term use. These include the demands of regulatory compliance, financial requirements, levels of expertise and so on. The challenge is greater if the continuation of the new use involves a break with previous experience. Finally, I consider the potential impacts of policy on temporary uses, both inadvertent and intended.
