Avalanches: evolution and impact
Turbulence in the atmosphere may occur due the velocity differentiation in a large current area, and result in the air mass either lifting or sinking. There are two basic types of climate conditions (snow climate) forming avalanches in the Rocky Mountains, which are characterized as maritime or continental, and additionally as transitional (in US: intermountain) between the two. The prevalence of a specific snow climate is primarily a function of the position and extension as well as of the distance of the mountain range to the ocean or sea. The snowpack presents a picture of the weather event from the time of snowfall, and consists of snow embedded in layers with different characteristics. The morphological avalanche classification differentiates between a planar and a confined avalanche path. In mountain areas, the forest stands fulfil important protective functions and may significantly influence the formation, size, and even the reach of avalanches.
