Historical Urban Pollution
Pollution released from anthropogenic activities is a major environmental concern at global, regional and local scales. Urban pollution varies from place to place, depending on specific past urban and industrial activities experienced in countries and cities. Contamination detected in environmental archives from even the most remote, ‘pristine’ regions (e.g. the Arctic) demonstrates the long‐range transport and far‐reaching impacts of air pollution. Air pollution increased as a consequence of the rise of ancient civilizations. Air pollution was viewed as a necessary consequence of industrial development, especially during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as coal continued to fuel the industrial revolution. Extensive urbanization and industrialization has released a complex mixture of pollutants to the air during the twentieth century. Airports are important hubs of air pollution, especially those located in major cities that are visited by millions of passengers each day.
