Gastroenteritis Epidemic Owing to Sewage Contamination of Public Water Supply

This article discusses the investigation of a 1965 waterborne gastroenteritis epidemic in Madera County, California, owing to sewage contamination of the public water supply. The direct evidence includes the high coliform counts in the distribution system and the water from Well 14. The indirect evidence includes the demonstration that water could flow from the sewage‐irrigated field into Well 14. Medical data supports the conclusions regarding the contamination.
