Palaces and Elite Houses
The archaeology of the Near East as an academic subject covers a geographical region extending from Anatolia in the northwest to the Indus Valley in the southeast, from the steppes of Central Asia to the southern Levant and the Arabian peninsula. This chapter focuses on the main architectural developments in the “land between the rivers” (Mesopotamia and Syria) and Anatolia. In Syro‐Mesopotamia, buildings identified as palaces differ widely, both chronologically and regionally, in terms of plan and decoration. The palaces of Syro‐Mesopotamia more closely resemble elite houses and even ordinary dwellings, in comparison with regions such as the Iranian highlands or Anatolia. Recent discoveries of a monumental, probably palatial building of the second half of the third millennium at Kultepe point to close relations between the elites of Anatolia and the Syro‐Mesopotamian world and indicate the roots of later developments.
