Hijacking the Tool
Towards a Transformation of the Architectural Representation
This chapter sets the stage for a broad reflection on the influence of tool hijacking in digital architecture, through the lens of representation. It shows how architects have transformed these hijacked tools into instruments of their own practices. The chapter then investigates the technical strategies developed and their direct or collateral influences on contemporary architectural thought. A second essential element that links the question of representation to the main theme is its creative relationship with techniques and tools. Occasionally, this relationship between representational technique and tool was reversed, as the designer had to extract a method of representation from the mechanical workings of a machine. The third aspect leading us to the representation is its direct relationship with the concept of detour. The chapter shows how architects manage to evolve in the spectrum of machine complexity, while creativity and invention come together to generate the result.
