Introduction to European COREPASOL Project on Harmonizing Cold Recycling Pavement Techniques
Cold recycling techniques are generally available and well known; nevertheless, they differ strongly in terms of utilization ratio, state of the art and public interest across Europe. Technical harmonization and European‐wide guidance for best practice and effective performance design are needed. Following the focus of the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR) Transnational Road Research Programme 2012, Characterization of Advanced Cold‐Recycled Bitumen Stabilized Pavement Solutions (COREPASOL) concentrates on research objectives defined within this programme for optimizing the recycling of pavements. The COREPASOL project focuses mainly on harmonizing mix design of cold‐recycled bitumen‐stabilized materials following the existing scientific and engineering experience and approaches. The key target in this relation is to develop and recommend comprehensive mix design and characterization by studying cold‐recycled asphalt specimen compaction methods, curing procedures and performance tests. The most common compacting devices used worldwide are: static pressure compactor, Marshall hammer and gyratory compactor.
