Loads on waterfront structures
When vessels approach a berth transversely, it is necessary to determine the berthing velocities that must be assumed for the design of the fenders. Guide values for sea‐going ships that can berth without the help of tugs can be found in ROM. The maximum fender reaction force that can act on the waterfront structure or fender dolphin can be determined using the appropriate diagrams/tables of the manufacturer of the type of fender selected and the calculated energy to be absorbed. Vertical imposed loads are essentially loads due to stored goods and means of transport. The natural sea state can basically be described as an irregular chronological sequence of waves of varying height, period and direction. It represents the superposition in space and time of various short and long‐period sea state components.
