Organising Beyond the Hierarchy – A Network Management Perspective
The combination of interdependence and uncertainty in large infrastructure projects provides a challenging environment for successful project delivery. This chapter builds on the work of Pryke in managing networks in project‐based organisations, making the point that project delivery relies upon a range of activities that are essentially hidden from view that are neither procured contractually nor codified in professional standards or governance arrangements. Hence, it emphasises the conceptualisation of construction project design and delivery systems as evolving self‐organising networks, which form as a response to such environmental conditions. The chapter investigates London's Bank Station Capacity Upgrade Project, with the help of social network analysis (SNA) as an analytical method to aid in understanding project actualities. The analysis focuses on SNA capability to capture invisible functionality that usually cannot be obtained using traditional scientific methods of project management.
