A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Casa de Blocco
This chapter presents the history and development process of Casa de Blocco. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of Casa de Blocco. At first glance, the 19th‐century ‘town palace’ housing of Genoa, which took its inspiration from the grand historic palazzo of this port city's main thoroughfare, the Strada Nuovo, appear as a simple abstraction of a Renaissance model. The repetition of the geometrically pure volumes form an orthogonal urban layout. The reality, however, is slightly more complex, with the relationship between the housing block and its surroundings varying from one example to another. Two different schemes and their relationship to the Strada Nuova archetype are analysed in the chapter: first, the linear developments of Via Caffaro, Via Assarotti and Via Palestro and, second, the area‐wide development of the eastern Foce district, around Via della Libertà.
