Most architects know exactly what they are required to do in carrying out full architectural services. In performing those services, they carry out the right activities but, as Eric Morecombe famously said, ‘not necessarily in the right order’. The idea of the Plan of Work is to list the many activities and set them out in the right order. It was in 1964 that the RIBA first published its Plan of Work in the RIBA Handbook of Architectural Practice and Management. It was revised in 1999 and 2007, and the last revision was in 2013. The idea of the 2013 Plan is that the architect, using the facilities provided by the RIBA, will be able to tailor the 2013 Plan to suit each project. Having said that, there is obviously a chunk of the architectural profession which loves paperwork, otherwise people would not have the 2013 Plan of Work.
