A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter is the leading guide to architectural design within a building information modeling (BIM) workflow, giving the practitioner a clear procedure when designing climate‐load dominated buildings. It focuses on onsite energy systems. On‐site, or distributed, energy generation has distinct advantages: It eliminates transmission losses; It represents a scalable energy source; It supports passive survivability; It is an opportunity for architectural expression; Building‐integrated photovoltaics displace other envelope cladding materials; It sustains technological innovation; The most visible if not iconic types of onsite energy generation are solar photovoltaic systems, by which sunlight is converted to useable electrical power. BIM can be a useful tool in supporting the design and optimization of photovoltaics (PV). While photovoltaic arrays generate electrical energy from sunlight through an electronic process, solar thermal systems passively heat a fluid by solar radiation. As with PV, collectors for solar thermal energy are the most prominent architectural feature of these distributed energy systems.
