A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Planning for Sustainability with BREEAM
Sustainability is now a key concept in development thinking, and the construction industry is at the forefront of the fight to deliver it. By use of legal and voluntary instruments, consecutive governments have sought to monitor and reduce the waste in the industry. However, it is generally considered that the voluntary measures give the best results. Green buildings have attracted international attention as a means of sustainable development within the current energy crisis. In the measurement of sustainability, the ‘greenness’ of a building may be measured by the context of the performance benchmark set. The foremost of such measures in the United Kingdom is the British Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). This chapter considers the need for sustainability, the drivers for sustainability and the industry perspectives. The BREEAM method is outlined, and data from three case studies is examined together with data from interviews with practitioners. The successes and shortcomings of the current system are discussed.
