A Coming Tsunami for the Water Industry: The Customer's Voice
When I graduated from university in 1979 in civil engineering, the future of the water industry seemed crystal clear in that, as before, it would focus on construction, growth, and innovation. Australia was growing along with the rest of the world, and it was an exciting time to be an engineer and to build things. Focusing on infrastructure and community building, engineers ruled the water industry (as far as I could tell), and life was easy because there wasn't any real focus on customers. I remember being told that the chief executive officer (CEO) of the company was always on the top floor of the building to be as far away from customers as possible. It's not that they couldn't see their customers, it was just that they needed binoculars to do so. Then the world changed when the industry wasn't looking.
