Simultaneous Measurement of Expansion and Water Humidity Sorption on Montmorillonitic Clays
A combined flow technique for study of sorption properties of clays has been developed. First, water desorption is recorded and, subsequently, simultaneous measurements of water adsorption and of clay‐bed expansion are performed. Several sets of smectite‐rich materials were used in the experiment. Control measurements were conducted on two standards (MX 80 and STx‐1). High positive correlation was confirmed between the dilatation and the smectite content, CEC and SSA. Different genetic types revealed different behaviour during sorption cycles. Higher values were recorded for bentonites with several exceptions, which can be interpreted as a result of illite‐smectite interlayering and water sorption to organic complexes. The technique is expected to become a powerful tool for determining the genetic type of clays and providing information on the content of smectites.
