Wastewater Treatment Infrastructure and Design
Depending on the characteristics of the wastewater and the preferred final disposal routes, wastewater treatment works can consist of a simple single operation or a series of separate operations, involving multiple units. This chapter deals with identification of appropriate technologies for the treatment and disposal of wastewaters from an urban environment, which originates mainly from domestic and agro‐food/beverage processing activities. It discusses the various factors including economics and climate change, affecting investment in the United Kingdom (UK) wastewater treatment infrastructure. These factors influence the investment decisions and risks that water companies are willing to take, and necessitate the need for the UK water industry to take a holistic view of these drivers for infrastructure selection and design.
