Welded Connections
In the construction field, fillet welds and butt welds are widely used, and plug welds, and fillet all round welds to a lesser extent. Reliability of welding depends on several factors including properties of parent and consumable materials, welding process, tolerances, preparation of surfaces, and storage and handling of consumables. For weld design, three fundamental assumptions are usually made: welds are homogeneous and isotropic; connected elements are rigid with negligible deformations; and only nominal stresses due to external loads are considered. The distribution of forces in a welded connection may be calculated on the assumption of either elastic or plastic behaviour. When a weld is subjected to pure shear forces or axial forces, the ductility of the weld is assumed to be sufficient to reach a full plastic redistribution of stresses along the weld, but only as long as some geometrical requirements or layouts are strictly fulfilled.
