Committee Report: Disinfection Survey, Part2—Alternatives, experiences, and future plans
In 2007, the AWWA Disinfection Systems Committee conducted its fourth survey of drinking water disinfection practices. Part 1 of the survey report was published in the October 2008 issue and describes the survey process and respondent demographics, recent changes, and water quality. This article describes selection rationales and operational details of survey respondents using various forms of chlorine (about two thirds used chlorine gas, about one third used nongaseous forms of chlorine) and alterative disinfectants including chloramine (30%), ozone (10%), chlorine dioxide (8%) and ultraviolet light (2%). Respondents— status and projections with regard to new microbial disinfection by‐products regulations are summarized along with future plans.
