X‐ray CT Study of Mini‐Fabrics of Organic Soils (Oostvaardersplassen)
Unusually high values of the effective friction angle of Dutch organic soils have led to the close‐up characterisation of multi‐scale fabrics of these soils. In this paper, the mini‐fabrics including thin laminations/lenses and fissures/flaws are identified with the help of a CT‐scanner, which render these soils very heterogeneous. The distribution of these mini‐fabrics versus depth is characterized by CT‐number profiles. The failure pattern of samples after triaxial compression tests is also visualized in CT‐images. The evolution of the mini‐fabrics due to triaxial compression is established by a statistical analysis of CT‐numbers over different parts of one cylindrical sample. Calculated local deformations of this sample indicate that the thin laminations restrict deformations in both compression and extension. The study of the mini‐fabrics enhances the understanding of Dutch organic soils.
