A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter examines the different type and style of arches and columns. The design of arch and dome construction is explained and we discuss the theory behind the design of such structures. With the aid of photographs, a practical example of the inversion principle in the design of arches is demonstrated showing the importance of compression in its members. The importance of maintaining the line of thrust within the middle third of the foundation and adjacent voussoirs is explained without which the structure can collapse. The significance of stone columns and architectural styles are explained.
