Some Hardwoods Used in Construction – With Their Main Properties and Sustainability Credentials
This chapter concentrates on those hardwood timbers that are seen reasonably regularly in use. It provides readers the trade name and ‘scientific’ name of each timber, as well as any common names, and also any variants to the ‘official’ name. As far as its ‘sustainability’ credentials are concerned, because most supplies of keruing timber come primarily from Malaysia, it can be obtained with full Malaysian Timber Certification Council certification – which means that it will bear the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) logo when seen in the United Kingdom and Europe. Supplies of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)‐certified greenheart are available from Honduras; in Guyana, it is classified as ‘vulnerable’. Supplies of both FSC‐ and PEFC‐certified European beech are available from France and Denmark, whilst Germany and Romania can supply PEFC‐certified timber.
