Characterization of Precast UHPC Pile Drivability
In 2005, AASHTO identified extending the service life and optimizing structural systems of bridges as two grand challenges for bridge engineering. Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) possesses superior strength and durability, which can assist in meeting these challenges. The research team has explored the use of UHPC in deep foundation applications. H-shaped precast, prestressed UHPC piles have been designed and prefabricated. The UHPC piles were designed with comparable overall dimensions and self weight to a steel HP 250 x 85 pile. The driveability of the UHPC piles compared to normal concrete, high performance concrete, and steel piles has been examined through a driveability study using a wide range of driving parameters and GRLWEAP. UHPC piles demonstrate increased driveability over NC and HPC and can be driven with comparable ease to steel piles.
