Comparative Study of Industrialized Construction Logic between General Prefabricated and Improved Prefabricated Construction in China
Prefabricated construction has been widely used in China due to its advantages in delivery, productivity, sustainable, and environmental performance, etc. With the support of the government, precast concrete construction has become the most important prefabricated method. However, because the logic of general prefabricated construction does not fit well with industry status, the practice still face too many obstacles. In order to fully adopt the prefabricated technology, industry participants have improved the general prefabrication method. Despite extensive research into attitudes and practice surrounding the uptake of prefabricated technology, there is limited understanding of how best to distinguish the industrialized logic between general prefabricated construction (GPC) and improved prefabricated construction method (IPC), and integrate their use into suitable construction conditions. This paper established a comparative framework based on action study from the perspective of the technology system, industrialized strategy, construction performance, and impact on the construction industry. The results of the comparative study proved that the two construction logics differ in their similarities, the improved prefabricated construction method is more in line with the development of China's construction industry than the general prefabricated construction in most instances. Both of the two methods have their applicable conditions.
