Securing More Nearly True Precipitation Measurements
The catch of freely exposed precipitation gages is deficient during windy conditions. Small-scale attached wind shields improve gage performance to some extent, but larger-scale obstructions to the wind flow may provide the best method for diminishing the detrimental wind effect. Drop trajectory calculations made using certain assumptions tentatively indicate that optimum obstruction height and distance from the gage (site characteristics) under common wind conditions can be described as a circular opening 25 ft in diameter in a forest with tree tops 15 ft or more above the gage orifice.
