Uplift Tests on Shallow Cast-in-Place Enlarged Base Pedestal Foundations in Clay
The behavior of three shallow, drilled, cast-in-place and backfilled concrete pedestal foundations installed in clay and tested in axial uplift was investigated. The pedestals had a base diameter of 2 ft and a shaft diameter of 10 in. and were installed to a depth of 6 ft in a stiff clay fill. Initially, native soil excavated from the holes was used for the backfill but was placed using different compactive effort to give a wide range of construction quality that might be encountered in practice. After initial uplift load tests were completed, the clay backfill was removed and a well-graded sand backfill was placed, again at different compactive effort to evaluate the influence of both backfill type and quality on behavior. The results demonstrate that backfill placement has a pronounced effect on the load-displacement behavior and ultimate capacity of shallow pedestal foundations in uplift.
