Long-Term Performance Evaluation of Permeable Asphalt Treated Base in Arkansas
Permeable Asphalt Treated Base (PATB) is a type of drainable materials used as internal drainage layers in pavements. It is expected to provide long-term strength as well as good drainage, and therefore improve the longevity of pavements. However, the performance of PATB is mixed. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the long-term performance of PATB on the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) SPS-1 site located in Arkansas. Using performance data (cracking, rutting and smoothness) from the LTPP database, this paper compares the performance of the sections with and without PATB. Design, construction and maintenance data are then compared to explain the performance differences. No strong evidence is found to support the contribution of PATB to better pavement performance due to contradicting observations and the compound experimental design of SPS-1 which mixed the influence of permeability and strength.
