Trunk Water Main Failure Consequence Modeling of Hydraulic Failure and Fire Flow
Trunk water main failures pose a risk to users because they often carry severe hydraulic, economic, and social consequences. The aim of this paper is to present a new model to characterize the consequences of trunk water main failure in water distribution systems. A new consequence index equation is used to calculate the severity of a failure event. A number of metrics to characterize a range of consequences to the system and water users are also presented. A focus is placed on the metrics that characterize the hydraulic consequences of water main failures. The consequence index equation is applied to the D-Town case study. The results suggest that the location of the pipe and time of failure are large contributing factors to the severity of consequence.
