The Plan of Boston, Massachusetts: A Capital City
State capitals, by example, inspire other cities in planning. The State functions may dominate a small city, or they may merely furnish the basis for a fine architectural treatment, as in Boston, Mass., the largest State capital. Boston's plan relates to its commercial and other municipal activities as a metropolis. It also shows the effect of its long history of 300 years. It still has many early architectural gems. At first, the streets were narrow and crooked. Later, checker-board streets were laid out in new territory and on filled-in mud-flats, thus, destroying Boston's peninsular shape.
