Micropiles are small diameter piles often used for support of foundations in difficult conditions. They are one of the more efficient deep foundation systems available in the industry. They can tolerate very large loads for their size, especially when socketed in rock. This paper presents three case histories on micropiles; all piles were socketed into weathered rock or bedrock. The micropiles were installed as foundations for a power plant, a retail shopping mall, and an industrial building. The case histories present information on the subsurface conditions, foundation selection, and micropile construction in schist, gneiss, and karstic limestone. The case histories also present information on pile drilling issues particularly that, from a production perspective, the success of any micropile application is a function of the tools and equipment that are used to drill the piles in an efficient, reasonable time. Pile load test data along with other pertinent information is also presented and discussed. The results illustrate that micropiles can be successfully utilized for virtually all kinds of ground conditions and that they are highly flexible to modification at anytime during construction in response to changing ground conditions.
