Dam Removal Sedimentation Evaluation
The potential drawdown of the John Day reservoir along the Columbia River is being evaluated. The John Day Dam creates a 76-mile long reservoir. Drawdown of the John Day pool may improve spawning conditions for endangered salmon species and natural flow regimes needed for successful incubation and emergence. As part of the drawdown study, a tributary sedimentation evaluation was conducted. This included identification of probable locations of barriers to upstream adult fish migration, analysis of sediment budgets for major tributaries, and determination of requirements for channel modification and dredging. Recommendations for future dam removal sedimentation evaluations are presented.
