Performance Characteristics of Siphon Outlets
Results of model and prototype studies on the behavior of large siphon structures are presented. Energy losses, minimum tailwater elevation for priming, and general-flow patterns were studied for two siphon configurations. Effects on energy losses of air accumulation at the siphon crown were studied for different sizes of air pockets. The rate of air removal because of the entraining action of a hydraulic jump at the lower end of the air pocket was determined from tests at Grand Coulee Dam.
