A view of the Powers Building at the northwest corner of Main and State circa 1888-1891. Construction of the block began in 1865 for financier Daniel Powers. It was designed in the Second Empire architectural style by Andrew Jackson Warner. Powers had Warner build several additions through the years so that his building would be taller than the others in the vicinity. The last addition was made in 1890. The Powers Building was known for the Powers Art Gallery, Powers Law Library, and for its sumptuous offices. The building also featured the first passenger elevator and the first marble floors in Rochester.
