The Elwood Building is prominent on the northeast corner of Main and State Streets. The Elwood Building was designed by architect James G. Cutler (who went on to become mayor of Rochester) and was built in 1879. It was known for its gargoyles along its roofline and gothic tower. Also notable was its mail chute, which Cutler patented and began manufacturing and installing in multi-storied buildings around the country. The Elwood Building was razed in 1967.
