EVALUATION OF THE HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE OF DERBA TOWN WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM; (OROMIA REGION, ETHIOPIA)
Water supply distribution network components needs to design carefully because of cost involved and its design period required to serve. However, in many of the developing countries like Ethiopia, the hydraulic and physical performance of water distribution network is inadequate to meet consumers" satisfaction. This study was conducted to evaluate the hydraulic performance of the existing water supply distribution system of Derba town and to come up with alternative solution. To perform the study, both primary and secondary data sources were used. The current average per capita consumption of the area was computed 21lit/cap/day while the system has been experiencing disruption and uneven distribution of water supplies for days to a week. It was common to see over flow of water at one of the reservoirs and leakage at some juctions of the existing system network. The computed result shows that as much as 38% water loss exists within the existing sytem per year. On the other hand, the daily demand in 2040 was projected to be 7800 m3/day, showing that the current demand is only 10% of estimated result and pointing difficult job ahead for the Town Municipality. The field survey data for distribution system was evaluated by using the engineering software called Water CADv8i. According to the simulated results; a maximum of 60 m pressure and 1.98 m/s flow velocity were examined in the existing system network. Similarly, a minimum of -30 m pressure and 0.01 m/s flow velocity were examined in the existing system network. Contrarily, an appropriate value in the range of 15-80 m pressure and 0.6-2 m/s velocity with additional improved hydraulic performance was simulated for alternative partially looped tree system depending upon the new plan of the town. The above simulation result of the existing system network of Derba town shows that it is mandatory to look for possible alternative. Hence, the alternative network with improved hydraulic performance done by this study is among one of the options.
