Construction and maintenance of ballochmyle viaduct, Scottish Region
Viaduct is on main line from Glasgow to Carlisle, via Kilmarnock and Dumfries, over River Ayr, 2 mi south of Mauchline; structure consists of seven masonry arches, and carries double line of railway, on gradient of 1 in 160, rising toward south; viaduct built about 100 yr ago is constructed almost entirely of red sandstone, but arch rings are of harder stone; maintenance record has been outstanding.
