Performance of linings and causes of their deterioration studied; lining in furnace with shell diam of 6.3 m operates at higher temperature which is also unequal in different zones thereby causing increased wear; lining of extra large capacity furnaces deteriorates with fusion, spalling and crumbling; zone of recrystallized periclase forms in PSh S brick during its life, which limits penetration of reagents from furnace chamber; production of wedge-shaped elements for lining large furnace and improvement of PShS brick are recommended.
