Methods employed in construction of foundation for 43-story Wells Fargo Bank building on loose, sandy soil with working space confined to area less than 200 ft square in downtown San Francisco are described; unusual feature is driving of batter piles on contractor-made skid rig, at extreme angle of 30° with 50 C Vulcan steam hammer; welded inside piles are grout pipes, used to solidify behind bulkhead so that no diagonal shoring inside excavation was required.
