Spalling of earth's surface by underground nuclear explosions
Spalling of near-surface earth layers caused by contained underground shots detonated in tuff, granite, halite, and alluvium was investigated; shape of spall gap is conical with sides concave upward; from arrival-time data it was possible to estimate radial extent of spall and to compute thickness of spalled layer at ground zero; maximum width of spall gap at ground zero was smaller than surface displacement at that point.
