Multiple subsurface spalling by underground nuclear explosions
Multiple spalling of subsurface layers in earth accompanies detonation of contained underground nuclear shots; interpretation of available data for shots detonated in tuff, halite, and alluvium points to existence of ascending and descending waves which produce spall gaps in subsurface; records of particle acceleration at depth indicate upward-traveling sequence of closures of these gaps; pattern of spallation is similar for tuff and halite shots; for alluvium shot, spallation appears to be largely consequence of slumping of cavity rather than of tensile stress waves reflected from free surface.
