Anchorages for hood canal bridge present engineering problem
Bridge will have 3500 ft of pontoons with 42 concrete anchors; span will be constructed over water from 60 to 350 ft in depth in area where there is maximum difference of 18 ft between high and low tide and tidal currents up to 2.2 mph; maximum wind velocity is 80 mph; reinforced outer shells of anchors will be poured in drydock, floated to site, filled with concrete and submerged; cables will connect anchors to pontoon bridge.
