Investigation of methods of preparing horizontal construction joints in concrete -- Tests of joints in large blocks
Series of shear, tensile and flexural strength tests were made on cores drilled from several areas of 3 concrete blocks to evaluate various methods of preparing horizontal construction joints; test results indicated no significant difference in quality of joints whether mortar was broomed or flowed onto joint surfaces, or whether lower surface had been subjected to prolonged or short-time drying prior to placement of new concrete; apparent superiority of mortar with high-flow characteristics on either wet or dry surfaces is shown.
