Experience with gate road supports in Belgian coal mines shows that supports consisting of articulated arches on wooden chocks have given every satisfaction in both level and steep seams; completely closed circular or elliptical arches are suggested in order to counteract floor rises, to offer stronger resistance to lateral thrust and to avoid bending of straight roof bars; in roadways driven into rock, use of concrete blocks has allowed several Belgian coal mines to create extensive network of lateral roads.
