Crush strength determination of rounded ceramic particles
Crush strength test was developed to define ability of individual ceramic particle to withstand compressive load; this information will help to classify mechanical properties of rounded ceramic particles for uses such as highway sign reflectors, catalyst supports, and bearings; glass beads, silica, alumina, and stabilized zirconia were chosen for experiment; variation in results due to use of different anvil materials, i.e., tungsten carbide, sapphire, and hardened steel, and speed of load application were studied; particle properties such as size, shape, hardness, density and grain size were correlated with crush strength.
