Large mechanical augers and steel-shell liners were used to prepare dry caisson shafts 85 ft deep for foundations of multistory building in Chicago, on site where pile driving and nightwork of any kind were excluded by anti-noise ordinances; 33 cast-in-place piers for entire project were completed during 6 wk in spite of unfavorable winter weather.
