Orkney causeway
Islands are tied up to Mainland by series of causeways nearly mile and half long and over 16 ft wide; work was undertaken to improve anchorage at Scapa Flow; 650,000 tons of rock were quarried and conveyed to causeway site; 325,000 tons of 5-ton and 10-ton concrete blocks were dumped at random to protect exposed faces of work; 3 1/2 miles of permanent new roads were built across islands.
