Electronic rock breaking
S African method consists of drilling rock in usual way, then charging it with cartridges containing specially compounded formula of combustible metal and chemical particles; on ignition by electronic means temperatures of from 3000-4000 C are generated in rock causing fracture; it is no longer necessary to evacuate miners from face; no noxious fumes are evolved; no damage is done to gem stones in rock.
