Seismic design of earth dams of Mangla project
Mangla Project includes three large earth dams situated in area potentially liable to severe earthquake shocks; maximum ground acceleration likely to occur was estimated by rational, but necessarily approximate, method, and from it accelerations in embankments were calculated; design of embankments against earthquake shocks was performed by modifying horizontal forces induced by earthquake; large free-board from conservation level to crest of dams is safeguard against overtopping following earthquake and number of design details were incorporated to allow for possible effect of earthquake shocks.
