Study is made of surface spread which occurs when jet of fluid is discharged at depth into fluid of greater density; method of synthesis is used to relate rate of spread to conditions obtaining at point where jet plus entrained fluid flow reaches free surface; experiments are described, which confirm correlation obtained and provide basis of working diagram for rate of spread; method for choosing scales is outlined by illustrative example and difficulties of incorporating a nozzle in model to reproduce prototype spread are emphasized.
