Collapse loads of steel frameworks allowing for effect of strain-hardening
Rigid-plastic-rigid theory of structural behavior is found to be adequate means of assessing stiffness of structure immediately on formation of last hinge in plastic hinge mechanism; if stiffness is positive, ultimate load will be either above or only slightly below plastic collapse load, whereas negative stiffness indicates ultimate load significantly below that given by plastic theory; correlation with test results for pinned-base and fixed-base portal frames enables derivation of design recommendations applicable to structures in steel to B.S. 968.
