New dry dock on river Clyde
New drydock at Elderslie Dockyard of Barclay Curle is designed for vessels of up to 38,000 tons dw; dock walls are of reinforced concrete and are designed as cantilevers founded on rock; they incorporate subway near cope level to take electrical and piped services; dock floor is of comparatively thin concrete and to prevent tendency to uplift by hydrostatic pressure from water seeping through underlying rock, porous concrete blanket and system of drainage are constructed under floor; 150-ton dock gate is of flap type; pumps and other facilities are also described.
